The year was 1984, yes more than a book title, more years than many have lived, but nevertheless that was the year we moved from Dallas, Texas, and left really good Tex-Mex food for what seemed a lifetime.  Though it is true that we ate some pretty good Tex-Mex food in Atlanta and the Washington D.C. area and back in Starkville, Mississippi; it was only when we discover the Superior Grill that we once again found Tex-Mex heaven.

Some have said the outside looks like a dump; I say it looks rustic.  However, once inside no one will hesitate to make themselves at home at one of the clean white tablecloth covered tables.

When you are seated a basket of chips and a small bowl of salsa for each member of your party will quickly be placed before you.  Your waiter, attired in a white jacket, will promptly attend to your food needs.  We have eaten at Superior Grill three times and the service has been exceptional each visit.

The aforementioned salsa is some of the best we’ve ever tasted.  It has the right consistency and balance of flavor and heat.  If you can stop eating chips and salsa for a moment I recommend the guacamole.  It is obviously freshly made and there is no filler in the avocado.  It is well worth the $3.95 price.

Several members of our various parties ordered salads such as the Taco Salad and Superior Salad and pronounced them excellent.  I’ll admit that salad, even a very good one, was not on my wanted list.

One member of our group ordered the tilapia and said it was excellent.  That brings me to the fajitas which I ordered twice at lunch.  The mere fact that I ordered them twice says a great deal about their quality.  The meat was tender, flavorful and served on a skillet with onions and peppers.  The soft tortillas completed a wonderful Tex-Mex meal.  The fajitas also come with soup, rice, cheese and sour cream.

On another occasion I ordered the skirt steak which is served with the same sides as fajitas.  The steak was tender, well seasoned, tasty and more than I could eat in one sitting.

Of course the menu offers a wide variety of steak, fish and chicken dishes.  I have only been able to scratch the surface of the menu to date but future visits will broaden my experience at Superior Grill.

Over the years my wife has always been a lover of flan.  We’ve ordered flan in restaurants from San Diego to Washington, D.C.  Many restaurants add their own little touches to their flan, but Superior Grill serves some of the best flan we’ve ever eaten.

If you like Tex-Mex or any variety of Mexican food and are either in, or passing through Birmingham, then the Superior Grill is a must.

They are open from 11 AM to 11 PM seven days a week.  I’m told, though don’t know from personal experience, that this is also a place often frequented by young singles.
