AN OLD GROUCH

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Waffle House

Pelham, Alabama

Anyone can review a fancy restaurant with an unusual and expensive menu.  You can talk about the presentation, service, ambiance, wine list and how convenient the valet parking may be.  There’s oh so much to discuss when commenting on that upscale eatery, but a Waffle House?  Well it is a restaurant of a different kind.  If you are interested in the wine list you are clearly not familiar with the Waffle house concept.

The Waffle House on Highway 31 in Pelham, Alabama, looks about like every Waffle House in the country.  It has a big yellow sign out front and everything.  Fortunately, and the only thing that makes it possible for me to eat at a Waffle House, this Waffle House does not allow smoking.  So already we are ahead of the game.

The menu is, well, it is the same menu offered in every Waffle House whose doors I’ve ever graced.  The key to a good Waffle House is in the preparation of the menu items.  Let me say that normally the tables are kept clean, the staff is friendly and even though they have lousy jobs they often seem to be in a good mood.

If you visit this Waffle House during the week there is a very good chance your food will be prepared as ordered.  It also has the benefit of being fast without being fast food per se.  I really like my bacon on the crisp side.  When held between thumb and forefinger it should not bend.  And that’s the way I get my bacon at the Pelham Waffle house.

If you want an old fashioned breakfast without spending a lot of money or time, then I highly recommend the Waffle House in Pelham.  Even I cannot write a two page review of a Waffle House.

Okay, a few Waffle House facts for you:

If you lay all of the Bryan bacon end-to-end that Waffle House serves in a year, it will stretch from Atlanta to Los Angeles seven times! (That's more than 21,000 miles of bacon)

If you could stack all of the sausage patties we serve in one day, it would reach the TOP of the Empire State Building! (Did you want grits with that?)

Waffle House serves more than 3.2 million pounds of grits each year. That is enough to fill 86 semi-trucks!

Each year Waffle House customers eat more than 334,000 pounds of pecans in their waffles. That is more than 21 million pecans. (http://www.wafflehouse.com)
